Passenger services stopped running on the Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway line in 1935. Central Station in Bonnybridge was still used for some goods but the line slowly deteriorated and became overgrown. Final closure came in 1964. In the early 1970s the broad cutting between the High Street and Station Road (Peathill Road) was landscaped and made into a park with the name of the “Bonnybridge Gardens,” though locals usually use the appellation of the “Sunken Gardens.” A complex of circular and helical paths linked by an axial path divided it up with the interstices filled with flower beds. A line of cherry trees along Wellpark Terrace to the west provides a flood of pink colour when in blossom.
