This huge complex of playing fields and running tracks occupied the site of an old meander of the River Carron and possibly the site of a Roman harbour. Throughout the 1950s to the early 1970s domestic rubbish was dumped in the old course of the river to raise the land level and this is one of the reasons why the park occasionally suffers from the emission of methane gas. To the west is Falkirk golf course and to the east Falkirk Cemetery. It is bordered on the south by the Falkirk-Stirling railway. The running track is central to the complex and has its southern turn set in the end of the old meander which creates a natural amphitheatre here.
A large car park on Stirling Road serves both the sports pavilion on the field and the golf club opposite. Footpaths and cycle paths traverse both the north and south ends of the field. The former occupies the raised river bank and is separated from the water by a broad belt of low-lying trees.
