Craigburn or Craigieburn lies to the north of Auchengean and the steading there acted as the home farm of Callendar Estate. It was here that the widow of the first William Forbes of Callendar lived for many years after his death. The New Statistical Account of 1841 states that :
“At Craigburn, the teacher has L.10 annually from Mr Forbes, besides a school and dwelling-house, rent free.”
The school was evidently for the estate workers and was replaced in 1849 by a new building at Auchengean to the south. Nothing else is known about the school when it was at Craigburn but it seems likely that it utilised an existing building and was associated with Mrs Forbes.
