John Wilson of South Bantaskine set up an “adventure” school for his employees in the Callendar Coal Works at Glen Village sometime in the 1830s. At it were taught the more practical subjects such as English grammar, geography, history, arithmetic, and algebra.
| YEAR ARRIVED | HEADTEACHER | YEAR LEFT | No. PUPILS |
|---|---|---|---|
| c1830 | William Buchanan | c1836 | |
| c1836 | Peter Penman | c1860 | 70 |
As some of the pits closed in the 1850s the school too was closed and many of the pupils followed their head teacher, Peter Penman, to the newly opened Auchengean School, some to one of the schools in the burgh of Falkirk.
The provision of schools was re-assessed in 1873/74 by the Falkirk Parish School Board when it was set up with John Wilson as its first chairman. Many thought that the children from Glen Village should be accommodated in a new school in the southern suburbs of Falkirk but it was pointed out that as there were only 50 children in the rural district to the south of the town, including Glen Village, it would make Auchengean unviable if they were withdrawn.
