Shortly after 1833, John Young settled in Grahamston and opened a school in the upper flat of a building which stood to the south of the entrance to Falkirk Iron Works (Love 1898). As a penman Mr Young is said to have been somewhat celebrated and was much engaged after school hours in teaching writing to the principal families in the district. The school seems to have closed after he succeeded James Horn as the teacher at the Grahamston Subscription School in 1847 for it does not appear on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map.
