Falkirk, Woodlands Crescent (S6)

In the garden of a house on the corner of Woodlands Crescent (NS 8843 7971) an old sculptured stone has been used as a garden ornament and was brought to the author’s attention in 2023.  Its origins are unknown but it probably came from a demolished building in the nearby town centre.  The cubic base of the stone is embedded into the garden bed leaving a winged face exposed as decoration.  The winged soul occupies the corner of the stone and is surmounted by scrolls containing simplified floral motifs.  Stylistically it dates to the mid-18th century.  Faint traces of the diagonal rays of a sundial may be seen on one side of the base, along with a rectangular depression which would have housed the gnomen.  The other outward face of the base has been lost.  The base measures 0.3m x 0.24m and is approximately 0.3m high.
