Balquhatstone East Lodge

The east drive of Balquhatstone House was just over 1km long and before 1840 had been a public road.  When it was close up it therefore required a lodge near Peatrigend to keep the public at bay.  The lodge had a pyramidal roof and a central chimney typical of the first two decades of the 19th century.  In front of it was a large semi-circular forecourt enclosed by curving walls with a set of four gate piers in the centre.

Illus: The East Lodge is much altered but the Gateway still bears its original appearance.
