Greenhill Farm Date Stones

Illus: The 18th Century Datestone.

Greenhill Farm lies 2km west of the village of Slamannan on the B803 Airdrie road.  Today the main building range is on the north side of the road and is aligned W/E parallel with it.  The dwelling occupies the western half and is made of quarried whinstone with dressed sandstone margins.  It is slightly higher than the western block which is rounded cobbles evidently gathered from field clearance.  In 2025 the wooden stalls for the horses were still in place here.  A central doorway in the eastern gable has a large sandstone lintel with “TR.JB 1718” boldly carved in large letters in relief, set within a rectangular border.  The stone appears to be in its original location.

On the other side of the main road is a small outbuilding, also made of field clearance stone.  A doorway in its west wall has been narrowed by the insertion of masonry on its northern side and converted into a window.  The original door lintel was left in place and has a rounded margin over the former entrance.  Incised into the stone is the inscription “16 TR JB 74”.

The initials “TR” on these inscriptions are for Thomas Russell; the name of his wife, “JB”, was Jean Brown.  Greenhill was part of the lands of Middlerig (John Reid Notes).
