Pirnie Lodge

The early 18th century house at Pirnie Lodge, between Slamannan and Avonbridge, was built by Rev William Hastie in 1735.  That date forms part of the inscription above the main east-facing door – “MR / WH IS 1735.”  The second set of initial are those of his wife Isabella Shaw.

The house is relatively modest and measures only 29ft by 19ft externally.  It is built of random rubble sandstone with a grey render.  The façade is typically symmetrical with one window on either side of the central doorway, and two others on the first floor above them. The jambs of the doorway bear roll-and-hollow mouldings returned at the top; the inscription on the lintel is in bold and raised letters on sunken panels.  The front windows have all been enlarged, but a small original window, with rounded arrises, which lights the stair, can be seen in the centre of the back wall together with a smaller one, of irregular shape, at ground floor level. In the north-east gable a window on the first floor has been built up, but a small one remains to light the roof space above.  The gables are crow-stepped, and the existing steep slate roof replaces an original roof of thatch. Internally there was a room to the right of the entrance, a stair in the centre of the house, and a hall and pantry to the left; and two rooms on the first floor.
