Rashiehill Farm

Rashiehill is a large farmsteading on the Mosscastle Road to the north-west of Slamannan. Two of the upright window margins in the north wall at the west end of the dwelling block have re-used door lintels with inscriptions from marriage date stones.

  1. Date stone with chamfered lower edge now placed on the right side of a window aperture and broken into five pieces “(1)7 AW MD 1(9).”  The upper edge is badly damaged and it is clear that the stone was not carefully removed from its original setting.   The first initials are for Alexander Waddell of Rashiehill.
  1. The second stone is of a softer sandstone and is broken into two pieces, inscribed “GW (JR)”.  The lower edge was square, but much worn.  The initials are probably those of George Waddell of Balquhatstone, whose son Alexander acquired Rashiehill in 1705.

Another stone, incorporated into the garden wall attached to the SE corner of the dwelling is part of a bolection door surround, of early 18th century style. A nicely dressed cubic stone with chamfered top edges in the stackyard to the north was probably the centre point of a threshing mill rather than a cheese press.

To the west of the dwelling is a barn, set at right angles to it.  It has a pigeon loft in its north gable with a single square point of entry above a ledge.

The Ordnance Survey Name book says that Rashiehill in 1860 was :

a farmsteading, one storey, thatched and in good repair. Property of Miller Esq, Frankfield, Glasgow.”
