When the Charing Cross fountain was proposed in 1906 it was realised that there were no functioning wells in the old town. As a consequence a well was placed into the wall at Grange Street and was completed by 5 January 1907.
A horse trough is shown near this spot at the corner of Grange Street and South Bridge Street on the 1897 Ordnance Survey map. A photograph shows it to have been very ornate with a statue at one end, but it does not seem to have doubled as a drinking fountain.
