That there was a private school in Maddiston is shown by the participation of 70 of its pupils in a visit to the grounds of Vellore House in 1878 (Falkirk Herald 10 August 1878). Meetings of such organisations as the Muiravonside Mort-Safe Association had taken place at the School-room as early as 1858 (ibid 17 June 1858, 1). This may be the same school referred to as “Miss Ross’s School at Maddiston” which John Robertson attended before going to Muiravonside School taught by Matthew Henderson, indicating that the Maddiston School was only for infants.
