The commission for a substantial villa at 17 Wellside Place for R H Menzies, law clerk, Bank Street, was one of J G Callander’s first new builds. It is not known how this came about, but it is probable that the two young men were well acquainted and that they had business dealings with regard to the sale and rental of property in the town.
The villa is well proportioned with a two-storey front block and single storey rear rooms. The wide eaves, hipped tile roof, half-timbered gablets, ground floor bay windows of two types, slightly advanced section with the porch set in the re-entrant with its window roundel – all hint at the arts and crafts movement.
