A tile works is shown on the north side of the Union Canal on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1860.
This appellation suggests that it specialised in the making of field drains and perhaps pantiles, using the canal to transport the bulky and heavy products. No railway siding is shown on the map. Together these indicate that the works opened after 1822 and before 1842. In 1875 the site was acquired by the neighbouring sulphuric acid works and the production of detonators for Nobel’s began there the following year.
The site lay immediately to the west of what is now the Travelling people’s Site.
