In 1975 it was agreed that Dennyloanhead School should be replaced by a new primary school 1km to the north at Head of Muir. A year later it was decided that it would be integrated with a nursery unit to accommodate 30 children. 1.6 acres of land was acquired off Haypark Road and the new school opened on 16 February 1979 with Margaret Cook from Dennyloanhead School as the head teacher.
It had seventeen classrooms laid out in a semi-open plan, a multi-purpose hall for assembly, an exercise and dining room with kitchen to provide 200 meals, a visiting service room and two tutorial rooms, one of which was used as a library. Externally it is faced with brown brick with deep-slated fascias, presenting an irregular zig-zag pattern of linked pavilions, each with a central roof-light. It was designed by Central Regional Council Architectural Services to accommodate 500 pupils and cost £562,000.
